Some stories write themselves, at different points in our lives, and through different experiences. The stories that we live and that we tell about ourselves shape who we are, and are an important way of expressing ourselves.
The storytelling project is a part of Grand Junction’s new heritage programme, which seeks to engage with our ever-changing and dynamic community. In this project, we focused on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) community local to Grand Junction, working with Elias Matar, a Palestinian director and drama practitioner who has been producing community performances of applied theatre around the world for many years. “We are primordial storytellers” says Elias, “Just like the storyteller we too live in our stories, so it is only natural that they should have such a profound effect on ourselves and our communities”.
The participants have been meeting every week, sharing their stories in workshops to produce short creative performances.

“All feelings are welcome here” were Elias’ first words to the group in the introductory session. As the weeks went on, we learned more about the art of storytelling and performance; the importance of narrative voice, the power of voice projection and the secret behind improvisation. Within a few weeks, the group put together a short performance based on a Palestinian folk tale during our ‘To the Table’ event organised every half term.
Elias makes the session fun and engaging, I learned about the best way to perform on the stage, how important it is to project my voice and how to engage people when telling a story in a creative way. Phayaphi is a great project coordinator too, she really cares about the project and brings the best olives, always!

Indeed, as Phayaphi (Grand Junction’s heritage coordinator) sets the table every week with hummus, olives, and Zaatar, the chatter about the room gets louder and fills with laughter. “This is the idea behind the storytelling project”, she says, “people express themselves, share their experiences, get their feelings off their chests, they learn new skills every week, but at the same time, it’s like a dinner party every week!”.
The sessions continue this term, but they have now become rehearsals in which we are bringing the stories of Hafiza, Lana and everyone else in the group together to build our production, Olive Jar. Olive jars, like our stories, are an important staple in every MENA kitchen, when they are opened and served onto plates, people gather around the table to share their stories. This is what we hope to bring to the stage on the 6, 7 and 8 July. As a part of the Shubbak Festival 2023, Olive Jar will be performed here at Grand Junction! Tickets are available now. أحيانا تروي لنا الحكايات نفسها، عبر محطات كثيرة في حياتنا وخلال تجارب عديدة نعيشه
فالحكايات التي نعيشها، والتي نرويها عن أنفسنا تشكل هويتنا وتوفر منصة للتعبير
مشروع سرد الحكايات هو جزء من مشروع أكبر هنا في غراند جنكشن والذي سميناه مشروع التراث، نساهم في التعامل فيها مع مجتمعنا. ركزنا في هذا المشروع على جالية الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا الموجودة هنا في وستمنستر، وضممنا مجموعة من بلدان كثيرة منها سوريا ومصر والعراق وفلسطين والسعودية والجزائر. يعمل المشاركون مع مدرب المسرح التطبيقي إلياس مطر، الذي اشتغل على اخراج مسرحيات عدة
يقول إلياس أننا رواة بالفطرة، فكما يندمج الحكواتي بقصصه ويعيشها فنحن أيضا نفعل نفس الشيء في قصصنا وفي حياتنا. من الطبيعي إذا ان يكون للحكايات تأثير خاص على مجتمعاتنا فكما تتأثر قصصنا بالمجتمع يتأثر مجتمعنا بالحكايات
منذ بدئ المشروع التقى المشاركون في ورشة عمل أسبوعية يحولون فيها حكاياتهم الى مشاهد مسرحية قصيرة

هذا ما قاله إلياس في أول حصة للمشروع. خلال الأسابيع التي تلتها تعلم المشاركون فن المسرح والسرد وأهمية إبراز الصوت وسر الارتجال المسرحي. قام المشاركون في بضع أسابيع بتجهيز عرض مسرحي قصير مبني على قصة

نستمتع ونستفيد كثيرا بالحصص التي يحضرها لنا إلياس. تعلمت ما هي أفضل طريقة للأداء على خشبة المسرح وكيفية إبراز الصوت والتفاعل مع الجمهور بطرق جديدة. وفيافي أيضا منسقة رائعة ومهتمة جدا بالمشروع بالإضافة إلى أنها تأتي دائما بأطيب أنواع الزيتون

بالفعل، ففي كل أسبوع، حينما يجتمع المشاركون حول صحون الحمص والزيتون والزعتر تعلو أصوات الدردشة والحديث والضحك. “هذا هو هدف المشروع” تقول فيافي – منسقة مشروع التراث بغراند جنكشن – نتعلم ونشارك ونعبر عما يخالجنا وفي نفس الوقت، إنما نلتقي حول مائدة طعام كل أسبوع
نقوم الآن ببروفات من أجل إنجاز العرض النهائي في شهر يوليو/تموز هذا العام، والذي سميناه جرة الزيتون
لجرة الزيتون، او المرطبان او القطرميز او البلارة او الشيشة أهمية كبيرة في المطبخ العربي، حيث لا تخلو من بيوتنا، وتحفظ أسرارنا وحكاياتنا. فماذا قد يحصل لو فتحناها؟
