The legendary Iranian music duo return to the UK for the first time since 2012 with a one-off special performance at Grand Junction

Hailed as “an evolutionary force in contemporary Middle Eastern music” by the Huffington Post, Niyaz creates a 21st-century global trance sound by seamlessly blending medieval Sufi poetry and folk songs from their native Iran and its surrounding countries in the Persian Gulf with rich acoustic instrumentation and modern electronic music.

Niyaz is led by the spellbinding voice of Iranian composer and vocalist Azam Ali and renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian. This rare UK appearance from the duo, whose return to London has been eagerly awaited, promises to be an unforgettable evening as they play favourites from their highly acclaimed albums.

The evening is presented by Arts Canteen in collaboration with Grand Junction.

Azam Ali – vocalist and composer

At the center of Niyaz’s music is the spellbinding voice of Iranian born, Indian raised, Azam Ali. Azam is a two time nominee of the prestigious Canadian JUNO Award whose otherworldly singing has been featured in many major Hollywood film and television soundtracks such as ‘The Matrix-Revolutions’, ‘Prince of Persia’, ‘Thor – The Dark World’, ‘True Blood’, ‘Alias’, and ‘Prison Break’.

Azam has also released three critically acclaimed solo albums since 2002 and has collaborated with a wide range of artists such as Serj Tankian of System of a Down, the world renowned Japanese group Kodo, Zakir Hussain, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Mercan Dede, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus, The Crystal Method, Pat Mastellato and Trey Gunn of King Crimson, Dredg, Chris Vrenna formerly of Nine Inch Nails, Ben Watkins of Juno Reactor, Buckethead, Steve Stevens and Mickey Hart.

Loga R. Torkian – Multi-instrumentalist and composer

Niyaz co-founding member, Iranian multi-instrumentalist/ composer  and JUNO Award nominee Loga Ramin Torkian, is internationally recognised for his ability to adapt the Persian classical repertoire to his own unique and modern compositions. He is credited for creating the first ever quarter-tone Guitar with movable frets which allowed him to apply many of the traditional Iranian techniques, melodies and ornamentation to his unique musical expression and compositions

Aside from his artistic achievements, Loga’s talents have also become sought after by many renowned film composers in Hollywood such as Mychael Danna, Harry Gregson Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Ramin Djawdi. His talents have been featured on major film scores which include ‘Body of Lies’, ‘Iron Man’ and  ‘Prince of Persia’.

Though Loga is skilled on a wide array of instruments such as the Lafta, Guitar, Djura etc., his main instruments are the Turkish Lafta, Kamaan and the Guitar Viol.

At Grand Junction we will continue to do a number of things to keep our staff and audiences as safe as possible.

While you are no longer legally required to self-isolate if you test positive for COVID-19, it is still advised that you stay at home to avoid contact with other people. Please bear this in mind before travelling to an event at Grand Junction if you have tested positive for COVID-19.

We welcome audience members and staff wearing face coverings if they wish to do so.

Hand sanitiser stations are positioned around the building.

Careful consideration of entry and exit points to avoid crowding. We will check your ticket at the entrance to the venue to avoid queuing and crowds forming indoors.
